The kiwi grandparents are stopping through--lucky us!

Grandad has been summoned for art lessons and Grammie reading lessons. 

We went on a few fun side trips as well and even on an early morning Kaena Point hike. See you in October on your way home!

Baptism

Cruz has been waiting years for this day to come. He has been learning and preparing to take this plunge. He asked me to give a talk on baptism and Jordan on the Holy Ghost. Beau baptized and confirmed him. I am so happy he made this choice and hope he continues to strive to be his best self. 

Hickam

Oshyns dreams came true this week as he spent at least 25 hours over 5 days skating! He learned a ton and improved leaps and bounds. Oshyn conquered things he never imagined. Skate camp ruled!

Mr. Doggles turns 3

The theme for this birthday boy was Goggles!  He loves to wear them in and out of the water so it seemed appropriate. And I've had a cake that I've wanted to make for years...

The boys set up a sweet obstacle course for his party. Everyone had to complete it with a set of goggles on. It was beyond hilarious and they did all the work. Love them all. 

Best birthday enthusiasm ever! I don't know if it's Kai or the age, but this guy was a good time. The excitement for every part of his birthday was amazing. Games, cake, presents all perma grin. 

Naupaka

For years I lived on Naupaka street (up in the Animal House). For years I never even thought to ask what Naupaka means. I was told this story a few weeks ago (there are a few versions...) after someone pointed out the Naupaka flower/bush and here it is...

In ancient times, there was a beautiful princess named Naupaka. Villagers noticed she looked very sad and asked her what was wrong. She told them that she had fallen in love with a man named Kaui, who was a commoner from the village below. Back then, Hawaiian tradition strictly forbade those of royal blood to marry people from common decent. The kupuna (elderly) advised them to take a long journey to a faraway heiau (sacred place), where they should pray and ask the high priest for guidance.

Naupaka and Kaui traveled together for days, over the mountains and through the forests. When they arrived at the temple – exhausted but filled with hope – the young couple told their story. The priest shook his head and explained that he could not help them. The Hawaiian gods must decide. Soon the sky darkened and a storm arrived. This was a sign from the gods disapproving their relationship; the young couple knew what they had to do.

Naupaka took the white flower in her hair and tore it in half. She placed one half in Kaui’s hand and told him to return to the seashore. She would live a lonely life in the mountains. A half of the Naupaka flower tells us hearts have been broken.

Today you may notice the Naupaka flowers bloom in halves. It is said that when the flower from the mountain (Naupaka Kuahiwi) joins the seashore Naupaka (Naupaka Kahakai), both Hawaiian lovers are together once again.

Tyce has learned that if he sits in a certain spot at Sunset Beach, swarms of tourists will want to take their picture with him. Is it the light hair? Freckles? Curls? I told him he's like a movie star--must be famous!

Eight is Great

Cruz turned eight and he had one small request. He wanted a wedding cake for his birthday. Vwola! Done.
